Best Way to Clean Your Guitar
Hey everyone, it’s David here! If you just clicked on this newsletter for the first time, hit the subscribe button to receive all the steps I took to learn guitar online! And to connect with me personally. It only takes a click of a button!
So, you want to clean your guitar? We should just use water right? WRONG! Bro if you use water, you’re cooked. Guitars are made of wood! So using water will make it more prone to the wood rotting, warping, and not smelling good. Instead, here is a breakdown of the best way to clean your guitar!
First thing you want to do, is take all the strings off your guitar. Some people say this is bad because the guitar is not used to no tension being on the guitar, thus the neck will warp. However, there is no evidence supporting that claim. So its safe to do so! After taking all the strings off of your guitar, you’re going to want to get a clean microfiber towel and wipe your guitar from top to bottom! Get any areas that are prone to your finger oils getting into the guitar. And remember to reach the parts of the guitar that are usually hard to get to while the strings are attached. Like right above the bridge, and the headstock.
After that, you can polish it if you want! Just buy any guitar polish of amazon or at your local guitar shop or guitar center. I linked the polish I use in the, "Gear of the week” section of this newsletter!
Next, you’re going to want to attack the fretboard. You’re going to want to buy some sort of fretboard cleaner oil. Rub it on each fret, leave it there for 5 mins. Then scrub off all the remains with some steel wool to get all the gunk out. I linked the oil I use in the “Gear of the week” section of this newsletter.
Lastly, it all comes down to what strings you use. If you don’t change your strings often. Make sure you wipe your strings with a microfiber towel each and every time after you play, to prolong the life of your strings. If you have sweaty hands, or change your strings often, I recommend getting Elixir Phosphor Strings. These strings help fight against the natural oils in your fingers that happen when you have sweaty hands. I’ve been using these strings for over 3 years, and they help so much!
